In 2016 and 2022, we held our first two art exhibitions which was named as respectively “Entrance" and "carnival". Up until that, mostly in the Art scene of Sri Lanka, Diachronicity (axis of time, representing ancient cultural narratives) was the main theme to be seen. Instead of that, the main theme of our above mentioned exhibitions was showing Synchronicity (present conditions over past). In our first art exhibition (Entrance), the hyper-consumerism of modern society was depicted using contemporary materials and advertising art. In the second art exhibition (carnival), Harshana showed non essence of life in the present consumer society using polythene while Teran showed the consumer culture through vibrant dot paintings. The third art exhibition that we hold in this year is titled as "Emoji". Images of emoji (Teran) and sculptural painting (Harshana) are used to create our artworks in this exhibition. The stillness of the colors and discipline in constructing forms are showcased here. Recreating external reality was not followed as a method. The study of language is important in developing “emoji” as a concept. The language we use, belongs to the diachronic axis. Whatever the language it is, even it has been developed for ages, it does not belong to the synchronic axis that we live. But “the letter” has developed positively. The language that only belongs to the diachronic axis, cannot complete “communication” properly. Language creates a lack of communication. Therefore, if you practice structural thinking (based on the philosophy of Structuralism) in the study of emoji, you can read the difference between language and communication. When we reduce language only to empirical experience, we think that the communication is the only function of language. But structuralism teaches us that communication is also communicating. For an example, when we go to a pharmacy with a prescription or to a supermarket with a grocery list, we think that the main function of language is communication. But if you ask Wangeesa Sumanasekara what “structuralism” is, you will notice that the meaning of that word is slipping. This does not mean that communication only happens when you visit a pharmacy or a supermarket. It means, it is a more difficult task to find a meaning to the word “structuralism” in Sinhala society than going to a pharmacy or supermarket. Because in Sinhala society, rather than communicating structuralism, what you can frequently find is language games on structuralism. If you have read Sadagomi Koparahewa's book “Sinhala Akuru Puranaya (සිංහල අකුරු පුරාණය)”, it has been well shown how letters in Sinhala alphabet produce meaning and also the historical change of the Sinhala alphabet. According to Koparahewa, a letter in the alphabet represents a certain sound. But what is missing in his book is what would happen if one wrote letters without silence or spacing. Which means what lies behind the 'letter' is not a sound but an emptiness. Without this emptiness, the letter would be represented as an “emoji”. What emoji achieve is that it does a greater job of communication than the alphabet itself. Therefore, the use of communication in language has expanded due to emoji. Although the letter cannot fully express human emotions, it nonetheless can be achieved through emoji. Nowadays, human emotions like happiness, anger, love etc. can easily be expressed through emoji. This gives us a revolutionary knowledge about us which is the materials for our emotions are not inside our inner mind, but outside it. That is, our consciousness is not situated inside but it is in outside. As a result, we can send an unlimited number of emoji without a specific recipient. This affects the recipient of the emoji message as well. These days, even the structuring of our unconscious is influenced by these emoji. This concept of emoji is our latest artistic approach and it is also a deep exploration of symbolism and meaning in the digital age.
